Ukraine Ornament by VikaVita 2025

$26.95

This ornament was designed by Ukrainian sisters Victoria and Vitalina Lopukhina (VikaVita). It celebrates Malanka, a Ukrainian folk holiday in the Christmas cycle that blends humor, role reversal, and masquerade. The design features characters from the celebration standing on a Tryzub (Trident), a symbol of Ukraine.

100% of the profits from this ornament will be donated to Ukrainian-led organizations assisting displaced Ukrainians and refugees.

This is the fourth in a series of ornaments created by VikaVita. Find all of their designs here.

Malanka is one of the key holidays in the Christmas cycle, celebrated on the eve of the New Year (according to the Julian calendar). Malanka is the main character of the celebration - traditionally portrayed by a man in costume. Other key figures include Vasyl, the Goat (Koza), the Old Serpent (Did-Zmiy), the Devil (Chort), and other symbolic characters.

Celebrations on Malanka include going from house to house, giving gifts, and performing. It’s like caroling, but so much more theatrical and immersive — a kind of folk carnival that transforms the whole village into a stage.

The Tryzub (Trident) that these figures dance on in this design is a symbol of the Ukrainian land as well as a symbol of traditions, which are preserved and revived in modern times.

Today, young people in Kyiv celebrate Malanka with great enthusiasm.
