While the idea of isolating people to slow the spread of illness has been around for centuries, the current US strategy of social distancing has its roots in a high school science fair project.
In 2006, 15-year-old Laura Glass used a computer simulation to test strategies for slowing the spread of epidemics for a science fair project. Laura’s project showed that closing schools is a highly effective way to reduce the impact of contagious diseases, and with her father, she co-authored a paper on the topic titled “Targeted Social Distancing Designs for Pandemic Influenza.” This paper helped inspire the current strategies that are being used to control COVID-19.
These earrings, created with Laura’s help, is based on an illustration of a contact network she used in her original project. The illustration, along with the story behind thisdesign, is included in the packaging.

These earrings are lightweight. I hardly feel them. They super cute, coordinate with a lot of my outfits and have an important message. These are my second pair of earrings. I highly recommend any product from Dissent Pins.
These earrings are bright and vibrant. The metal is study, not flimsy, and they are very well made. I highly recommend this product. I've enjoyed telling my students that social distancing (& these earrings) are based on a high school student's science project.
I like these pretty earrings as jewelry- and it is an added benefit that they might stimulate conversation about their origin and intent. They will also serve as a reminder for me to stay safe, while still connected to those I care about.
I now have these earrings, the RBG necklace, and the "I enjoy not having Polio" pin--I can't stop! I love all of their stuff. Comes nicely packaged and good quality.
